Instead of taking the mess away or requiring the mess-maker to deal with the consequences alone, the Father’s heart is to walk through the consequences alongside them, bringing comfort, correction, wisdom, and courage as they clean it up.

This doesn't change the reality that walking through the consequences of our mess with the Father is painful. In fact, pain is the element punishment and discipline hold in common. The difference is that with punishment, our experience with pain only increases our fear of punishment and encourages us to harden our hearts even more. But with discipline, pain breaks our hearts and softens them.
